QUALITY CONTROL

At FYREX, quality control is integrated into every stage of fire extinguisher manufacturing. Our inspection and testing process is designed to verify material quality, manufacturing consistency, component functionality, and finished-product performance in accordance with applicable product standards and approved testing procedures.

The Quality Control (QC) process for portable fire extinguishers under IS 15683 (governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards - BIS) spans four stages: Raw Material Inspection, In-Process Manufacturing Controls, Finished Goods Evaluation, and Mandatory Type / Factory Audits.

Raw Material & Component Verification

Under IS 15683, Raw Material & Component Verification (Incoming QC) requires strict testing of all raw supplies against their respective Indian Standards before assembly:

  • Cylinder Metallurgy: Verification of cold-rolled steel, aluminum, or seamless steel sheets (IS 513 / IS 7285) for chemical composition, minimum wall thickness (tmin⁡tmin), and weldability.
  • Extinguishing Media: Purity, moisture (<0.25%<0.25%), and flowability testing for ABC powder (IS 4308), BC powder (IS 4308), foam concentrate (IS 4989), and CO2CO2 gas (IS 15222).
  • Valves & Gauges: Brass/stainless valves thread-checked (Go/No-Go) and pressure-tested; gauges calibrated for ±4%±4% accuracy on dead-weight testers.
  • Hoses & Rubber Components: Hoses tested to withstand ≥3×≥3× working pressure without rupture; plastic fittings and O-rings verified for thermal endurance (+60∘C+60∘C to −30∘C−30∘C).
  • Safety Mechanisms: Tamper seals and safety pins tested on force gauges to ensure pull-out force stays strictly between 20 N and 100 N

In-Process Manufacturing QC Controls

In-Process Manufacturing Quality Control (IPQC) under IS 15683 covers real-time inline checks during production to ensure structural and operational reliability:

  • 100% Hydrostatic Proof Test: Every shell undergoes water pressure testing at 1.5×1.5× to 2×2× working pressure for at least 30 seconds with zero leakage or distortion.
  • Coating Integrity: External powder coating thickness verified (50–80 microns) with cross-hatch adhesion tests; internal lining for liquid units spark-tested for pinhole-free coverage.
  • Filling Precision: Automated inline weigh-scale checks enforcing strict mass tolerances (±2%±2% for powder, ±1%±1% for liquid, ±5%±5% for CO2CO2).
  • Leak Detection: Pressurized units (with dry nitrogen) are submerged in warm water or run through electronic sniffer detectors to prevent micro-leaks.
  • Assembly Controls: Automated torque-controlled valve tightening, dip tube inspection, and safety seal pull-force verification (20 N to 100 N).

Finished Product Acceptance & Type Testing

Random batch sampling is conducted by QA personnel according to the AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) defined in IS 15683.

Batch Selection ──► Mechanical & Environmental Testing ──► Fire Rating Fire Test ──► ISI Marking

Physical & Mechanical Destruction Tests

  1. Burst Pressure Test:Minimum burst pressure must be ≥2.7 to 3× working pressure depending on the shell material.Failure mode must be ductile (no shrapnel or fragmentation).
  2. Pressure Cycling Test:Shell subjected to 5,000 pressure cycles between zero and working pressure at a rate of 12–15 cycles/min, followed by a final proof test.
  3. Crush Test:Shell placed between two parallel flat plates and compressed to 1/3 of its original outer diameter without cracking or seam separation.

Environmental & Operational Testing

  • Temperature Extreme Storage: Units are stored at extreme limits (−30∘C to +60∘C depending on class) for 24 hours before testing discharge performance.
  • Discharge Efficiency:Minimum 85% for dry powders and 95% for liquids/foam of nominal contents must be discharged.Discharge range (jet length) and total time must strictly match declared ratings.
  • Micro-Leakage Detection:Stored-pressure units are immersed in warm water baths or evaluated via helium mass spectrometer leak detectors. Max allowable leak rate: <6%<6% of nominal charge per year.
  • Salt Spray Corrosion Test:Completed units undergo 240 to 480 hours of continuous neutral salt spray (NSS) exposure per IS 9000 / ASTM B117 without showing base metal corrosion or operating mechanism binding.
  • Resistance to Vibration:Multi-axis vibration testing followed by a discharge test to confirm powder compacting/caking has not occurred.

Fire Performance Test (Type Testing)

Representative units are subjected to standardized live fire tests:

  • Class A Rating (Wood Crib): Verification of extinction time and burn-back prevention on standardized wooden crib constructions.
  • Class B Rating (Flammable Liquid Trays): Rapid suppression test on heptane/water trays within strict time frames.
  • Electrical Non-Conductivity (Class C/Liquid Mist): Liquid extinguishers tested against a live metal plate at 36,000 Volts (36 kV) — current leakage through the discharge stream to ground must not exceed 0.5 mA.

BIS Documentation & Factory Audit Requirements

To maintain an active ISI Mark License (CM/L) under BIS guidelines:

In-House Testing Laboratory: The manufacturing plant must maintain a fully equipped, climate-controlled laboratory containing calibrated dead-weight testers, salt spray chambers, environmental test ovens/freezers, burst pressure rigs, and electrical insulation test gear.

Surveillance & Audits: Regular unannounced surveillance visits by BIS inspectors include random sampling from factory inventory and the market for independent testing at national laboratories (e.g., NTH, Central Building Research Institute).

"All equipment used for testing is calibrated annually to ensure accuracy and reliability. Testing instruments are supported by calibration from NABL-accredited laboratories."
